Armidale ist eine Stadt im australischen Bundesstaat New South Wales und liegt etwa auf halbem Weg zwischen Sydney und Brisbane. Sie liegt in der Region New England in den Northern Tablelands auf etwa 980 m Höhe.

Beschreibung

Armidale wurde 1849 gegründet und hat 21.312 Einwohner.cite-ref-cen21-1-1[1] Der Name stammt von George James Macdonald, in den späten 1830ern Commissioner of the Crown Lands, und ist eine veränderte Schreibweise von Armadale auf der schottischen Isle of Skye, dem Sitz des Clans der Macdonalds.cite-ref-3[3]

Die Stadt beheimatet die University of New England. Außerdem stehen hier zwei Kathedralen, die St Peter's Anglican Cathedral der anglikanischen Kirche und The Catholic Cathedral of St Mary and St Joseph des römisch-katholischen Bistums Armidale. Des Weiteren besitzt Armidale den am höchsten gelegenen Flughafen Australiens. Armidale ist mit der Eisenbahn an der Strecke Newcastle-Toowoomba und über den New England Highway zu erreichen.

Armidale ist Sitz des Armidale Regional Councils.
